Travelers can now visit www.AA.com from their Web-enabled phone
American Airlines is running a sweepstakes promotion and instant win game with handset maker Nokia to drive traffic to the mobile version of the AA.com Web site.
The “On the Move” sweepstakes and instant win game offer participants the chance to win prizes including an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Los Angeles with tickets to a red-carpet event at Nokia Theatre LA Live, 61 Nokia N95 mobile phones and up to 100,000 AAdvantage frequent-flyer miles.
“We thought it was a fun way to teach people and create more awareness for our customers on what they can do on the mobile site and the time it can save you and the convenience it provides," said Marcy Letourneau, spokeswoman at American Airlines, Fort Worth, TX.
The promotional effort comes less than three months after the airline launched its mobile site (see story).
Consumers visit the site at http://www.aa.com/promo to register for the sweepstakes and learn about the mobile AA.com. They receive one entry each time they register on the site during the promotional period.
Participants also get one entry for visiting AA.com on their mobile phone or Web-enabled mobile device. And they get one entry for referring a friend by forwarding the sweepstakes information to up to three people.
Also, consumers can play the instant win game by visiting the mobile AA.com once a day from a Web-enabled mobile phone or device. The grand-prize winner gets 100,000 AAdvantage miles and the eight first-prize winners 10,000 each.
Winners will be selected in random drawings.
The sweepstakes and instant win games run through June 16.
The mobile AA.com is a condensed version of the traditional Web site. Visitors with Web-enabled phones can check schedules and book flights, view itineraries and change reservations, see fare specials and request upgrades.
The mobile site also lets consumers check in for a flight or check flight status, enroll in the AAdvantage program or view miles, get information on Admirals Club locations, buy a one-day pass and find information on destinations, airports and weather.
Typing AA.com on a Web-enabled phone automatically routes visitors to the mobile site. But they can also access the traditional AA.com by clicking on a link at the bottom of the page.
The mobile site can also be visited through http://www.aa.com/mobile.
American Airlines runs public promotions at least once every quarter. Each effort typically focuses on a new tool or feature that the airline has introduced. It was the mobile site's turn this time.
"A lot of our customers carry cell phones and mobile devices when they travel and just in general," Ms. Letourneau said. "So obviously, we want to cater to them and make their travel as convenient as can be."
