Stop & Shop uses Motorola, Modiv Media for mobile shopping
January 22, 2008

Modiv Shopper will be in use at about 100 Stop and Shop stores in New England
Supermarket chain Stop & Shop has turned to Modiv Media and Motorola to offer Modiv Shopper, a portable shopping assistant backed by Motorola’s MC17 mobile computer.
Stop & Shop customers can now have shopping information and self-service checkout options via the device. Modiv Media’s Modiv Shopper gives shoppers the scan-and-bag service and offers targeted savings to customers.
“Motorola’s primary role has been in developing the technology,” said Frank Riso, senior director of retail operations at Motorola.
“Stop and Shop has had any number of different modalities of self check-out, tablets, smaller, larger and [now this], so we’ve developed this technology with input from them,” he said.
The handheld device is known as “easyShop” by Stop & Shop customers. The handheld itself is a Motorola MC17 model that comes with a large color display designed to withstand the rigors of everyday use, including accidental drops and spills.

Customers can receive tailored promotions based on their individual shopping history, redemption history, in-store location tracking and just-scanned items in aisles.
“The challenge that any retailer has is keeping their customers,” Mr. Riso said. “It’s easier to keep customers than to gain new ones. [To do this] there needs to be a positive shopping experience. Retailers need to have a competitive edge."
