Talksport reaches 12M monthly page views as result of app revamp

Sports radio station talksport is bringing in 12 million monthly page views to its application, which is an increase from one million monthly page views six months ago.

The talksport app is available for BlackBerry, Android and iPhone devices. The company is working with Polar Mobile on this initiative.

?Media brands need to have a presence everywhere,? said Kunal Gupta, CEO of Polar Mobile, Toronto.

?Our experience with talksport is proof of user bases wanting to consume content through an app,? he said.

Talksport is a London-based sports radio station.

Although talksport has more users on the iOS operating system, BlackBerry users generate the most traffic, most likely due to the small number of competitor apps in the space, according to Mr. Gupta.

Additionally, BlackBerry users barely outnumber Android users.

The talksport app brings in 76 monthly page views per unique user. The average user accesses 7.6 pages per session, meaning that consumers come back to the app an average of ten times per month.

The app claims to have an audience of 150,000 monthly unique users.

The talksport app was relauched in February. To drive downloads and awareness of the app, the company has promoted it on the talksport Web site, on-air and through social media.

The app pulls Web content in real-time, including videos and articles. Article text can be formatted to read either larger or smaller and photographs can be tapped on zoom in.

Users can also save their favorite stories for quick future access.

Content can be shared via Twitter, Facebook, email or through SMS.

Additionally, the app includes live streaming to let users listen to radio broadcasts.

Tabs across the top of the app let users browse through sports by name.

The app also pulls in the company?s YouTube videos to let users browse through additional content.

For publishers in particular, having a mobile presence is critical as consumers increasingly rely on their mobile devices to access news content.

In fact, a recent study from the Pew Research Center?s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that mobile increases the amount of news that users consume.

According to the study's findings, the move to mobile platforms opens up new opportunities for marketers with 50 percent of smartphone news users sometimes or often noticing ads when they read content (see story).

?The amount of traffic has grown because the quality of the app is strong and it is easy to use for all devices,? Mr. Gupta said.
