Burton Snowboards enhances snowboarding experience via companion app

Burton Snowboards has partnered with Nokia on a mobile application to engage snowboarders and skiers while they are on the slopes.

The global Burton app includes augmented reality, near-field communication and location to help snowboarders manage their trips.  The Burton app is available on Nokia?s Lumia 620, 820, 822, and 920 devices and can be downloaded for free from Microsoft?s Windows Marketplace.

?Burton is a leader in the snowboarding community that has had a relationship with Nokia for several years, and this isn?t the first innovative outcome of our partnership,? said Matt Collins, director of application and partner marketing at Nokia, New York.

?With the Lumia range of devices running Windows Phone 8, we saw an opportunity for Burton to build what we felt would be the best snowboarding companion app available for any device,? he said.

?In this way, the Burton app is indicative of many top apps for Lumia. We are focused on giving Lumia consumers the best app experiences, with exclusive features and content they can?t get anywhere else.?

Mobile ride
The Burton app pulls in snow levels, maps and weather forecasts based on a user?s location and can be used to track a snowboarder's progress throughout the day. For example, information such as total ride time, speed and distance are all collected in the app.

Forecasts for more than 2,600 resorts are pulled into the app.

The app also leverages augmented reality and NFC to help consumers stay in touch with their friends while they snowboard. Users can tap their phones together to sync up and can then view each other?s location on the mountain through augmented reality.

Under the tune up feature, consumers can listen to music playlists.

Using the app, consumers can upload a 30-second or shorter video. The video can then be edited and shared to friends and family.

The app also pulls in Burton.com to let consumers shop for gear from their handset.

Video and blog content is also accessible via the app. For example, consumers can live stream Burton?s Open Events or read Burton?s blog to keep up to date on the brand.

Multiplatform view
Nowadays, it is critical that marketers have a presence across all operating systems, including Nokia?s new devices on the Windows 8 operating system.

Burton has also loaded this app with features that center on one specific demographic that might be effective to drive repeat usage for consumers.

?The one feature fans seem most excited about is the Burton Sequencer, which allows them to capture a video and then turn it into a photograph that reveals a sequence of action shots all in one image that they can share with friends over social media,? Mr. Collins said.

?Lumia has industry-leading imaging capabilities, and this is a fun and useful way to show bring them to life,? he said.
