Mobile Minutes: Facebook and Uber; Apple shuts Topsy; Amazon?s thank you notes; Wearables disappear

Facebook Inc. said on Wednesday it is testing a service that will allow users of its Messenger app to hail Uber rides directly from the app, without leaving a conversation or downloading the ride-hailing app.

Topsy, the Twitter analytics firm acquired by Apple Inc. two years ago for more than $200 million, said it is shutting down the service.

Amazon has started packing gifts with scannable codes to automatically send thank-you notes. The notes, which became part of Amazon's gift receipt service for this holiday season, include a QR code designed for the Amazon app.

New Enterprise Associates venture capital partner Rick Yang predicts that wearables will "disappear" in 2016. The first generation, like theApple Watch, Google Glass, Fitbit and Jawbone, has opened the door to a slew of new, more fashionable products, said Yang.
