Barnes & Noble extends reach via mobile initiative

Barnes & Noble, the nations No. 1 bookstore chain, has grown its mobile strategy with the addition of a new initiative meant to better support busy customers that are on the go.

The bookseller has launched an iPhone application that lets users snap a picture of a book and receive product information right to their phones. The app allows lets customers find a store, see in-store inventory and even reserve products while on-the-go.

"Barnes & Noble has seen significant growth in our mobile traffic since launching a site optimized for mobile devices in May of 2008," said Miles Williams, mobile product manager at Barnes & Noble, New York. -- The B&N Bookstore app is the ideal companion for book lovers who want quick and easy access to the millions of titles and exclusive content available on Barnes & Noble.com."

Barnes & Noble is using the app to inform customers about the more than 50,000 events in its stores.

The book store giant has partnered with LinkMe Mobile and Spotlight Mobile, Inc. so that users can simply snap a photo to search millions of products.

Using the iPhone camera, all a user needs to do is just snap a photo of the front cover and within seconds get product details, editorial reviews and customer ratings -- even find and reserve a copy in the store closest to them.

The store locator will help users find the Barnes & Noble store nearest to them, see upcoming events and get directions.

Also, users can explore exclusive Barnes & Noble content from their iPhone including bookseller recommendations, the Barnes & Noble Review and Barnes & Noble Studio's Emmy-winning video clips and interviews.

Making purchases on-the-go with the B&N Bookstore app is easy, since users who already have an account with BN.com can simply enter their email address and password to sign in and access their account information and address book.
