Traffic.com app aims to save commuters time, money

Traffic.com, a provider of traffic-related data across the United States, has made its debut on the iPhone platform with a new application.

The application is powered by uLocate Communications and will provide users with the fastest and shortest routes and other real-time traffic data. Ad-support within the application is from Navteq?s LocationPoint Advertising and advertisers include hotels such as Holiday Inn, Best Western and Hyatt, as well as quick-service restaurants such as Jack in the Box and Chili?s.

?The strategy is pretty straight forward,? said Dan Gilmartin, vice president of marketing at uLocate, Boston. ?Traffic is a very compelling service for mobile and we are always looking to build more services on our platform.

?We feel that traffic is not only a compelling service, but it was also an underserved market,? he said.

?We believe that with our ability to build market-leading services combined with the best data in the market from Navteq, we would be able to help commuters save time and money in their daily commutes.?

Traffic.com is using uLocate?s location-enabled mobile services to reduce time spent in the car.

ULocate is a provider of location-based mobile services.

Navteq is a global provider of digital map, traffic and location data that enables navigation and location-based platforms worldwide. The company, which recently acquired Acuity Mobile, delivers targeted mobile marketing content.

The Traffic.com application is targeted toward daily commuters.

Features include MyTraffic personalized drives that are synced with the Web site, letting users create customized routes. JamFactor calculations inform drivers of the severity of traffic delays using real-time data as well as speed flow.

Additionally, real-time color-coded traffic flow on maps can be panned or zoomed to view area traffic congestion or set to GPS mode to move along with commuters. It was built on the Navteq MapTP platform.

Also available on the application are data sets for accidents, construction, events, weather and congestion, the ability to save favorite roads and road segments for quick access through the traffic dashboard. Users can find top traffic hotspots by city, mass transit data from local transportation departments and location-enabled discount offers from relevant merchants.

Mr. Gilmartin said the new application can provide a lot for mobile marketers.

?It provides a highly-targeted, relevant and interactive advertising for mobile marketers, including calls-to-action like click-to-search, click-to-call, click-to-navigate and click-to-coupon," Mr. Gilmartin said.
