Zagat expands reach to Apple?s iPad

Restaurant guide publisher Zagat Survey LLC has launched the Zagat To Go application for the iPad and is looking to drive revenue on Apple?s newest device via mobile advertising.

Developed with mobile application provider Handmark, Zagat To Go for iPad is the latest addition to Zagat's suite of applications available across a wide range of mobile platforms. The new iPad application offers access to Zagat's restaurant ratings and reviews that help diners make quick, informed decisions based on the collective opinions of thousands of avid diners.

?We wanted to take advantage of the latest Apple technology and the opportunity to be the first restaurant review app to launch on this exciting new device,? said Ryan Charles, senior product manager at Zagat Survey, New York. ?Eating out has become an integral part of everyday life and the app was created to appeal to a wide demographic.

?The app is great for tech-savvy urbanites who are looking to discover exciting new restaurants in their neighborhood, as well as travelers who demand accurate, reliable restaurant information at their fingertips wherever they are,? he said.

Zagat Survey is a source for information about where to eat, drink, stay and play. Zagat has over 375,000 surveyors who rate and review thousands of restaurants worldwide.

Zagat content is available in print, on the wired and mobile Web and through applications for Apple?s iPad and iPhone, Google?s Android, Research In Motion?s BlackBerry and Palm?s WebOS.

Mobile media company Handmark developed the application.

?Handmark is a first-class mobile developer,? Mr. Charles said. ?Their expertise in mobile helps us provide our trusted content to consumers on many new and emerging platforms.?

Zagat gives the iPad high marks
The universal application costs $9.99 in the App Store for new users, while existing Zagat To Go for iPhone and iPod touch customers will receive free upgrades.

Zagat To Go for iPad provides an optimized experience and its real-time search delivers dynamic results as the user selects criteria such as neighborhoods, cuisines and special features.

Restaurant listings can be displayed on a map or in Zagat's classic guidebook layout, a throwback to the company's print publishing roots.

Each detail page includes Zagat's signature ratings and reviews, as well as photos and other features.

Users can add restaurants to their favorites list, make online reservations or save business details to their contacts.

Up to 8 results can be emailed via the classic book view, creating a mini-Zagat guide to share with friends, family or other dining companions.

Zagat is turning to mobile advertising to promote the application.

?Our plan is to advertise on the iPad device itself,? Mr. Charles said. ?We will advertise on the mobile Web and within other apps to target the 300,000 plus iPad users while they are ?in the moment.?

?When a user clicks on the ad for more information, they are routed into the App Store where we can measure a direct response,? he said.
