Oz paves yellow brick road for mobile email

Mobile messaging provider Oz has introduced an email service for smartphones called SmartMail.

With SmartMail, consumers can send and receive emails more efficiently from their mobile devices. SmartMail is designed especially for smartphones running Windows Mobile and Symbian.

"OZ's strategy is to provide mobile operators with a fast, easy way to deploy new mobile messaging services with low total cost of ownership while enabling them to deliver the appropriate features and price points for their subscribers," said Michel Besner, senior vice president of marketing for OZ Communications, Montreal, Canada.

"OZ's research has identified a large and growing prosumer market made up of savvy consumers, home business and small business individuals who heavily rely on mobile email to manage their lives and businesses," he said.

OZ SmartMail answers the growing market demand from advanced mobile email users who require more enterprise-like email capabilities, but do not want the technical complexities or high costs associated with enterprise mobile email.

SmartMail provides subscribers access to smartphone services such as ISP or portal email accounts like Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, AOL Mail and Google Gmail.

Oz, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, with regional offices in the United States, Europe and India, has been recently implemented by Verizon Wireless's email and Web platforms for Verizon smartphones. The service offers such features as similar-to-PC email, and access to email from Yahoo, AOL, Google Gmail or MSN or ISPs using POP3 or IMAP.

Additionally, subscribers can open and send full file attachments supported by their specific device, receive SmartDelivery Notifications that informs subscribers of new email, Fast Reply, Offline Mode, and receive support for multiple accounts.

SmartMail offers mobile operators faster revenue generation, fast and low cost market entry, higher usage and retention, and efficient use of network.

"For the mobile operator, OZ SmartMail provides a very fast on-ramp to the prosumer market, which is growing," Mr. Besner said.

"It allows the mobile operators access to a new market with low entry costs, and also enables them to differentiate their device offerings with the right mobile email service for the right phone/user driving higher usage and retention. In addition, the SmartDelivery Notification feature smartly utilizes bandwidth, saving network costs and battery life," he said.

"For the subscribers, OZ SmartMail offer much more advanced email features than they would find on consumer mass-market phones, without the heavy subscription costs," he said.
