GameSpot launches app to appeal to avid gamers

GameSpot has launched the ultimate tool for gamers ? a new iPhone application that keeps them up to date on the latest game releases.

The application was developed by CBS Mobile and gives users the latest info on their favorite games. Consumers can browse content by genre, recent releases or by the most popular titles.

?Our goal was to make GameSpot's deep library of rich media content easily accessible to their growing base of mobile users,? said Daniel Sakai, senior director of games, music and lifestyle at CBS Mobile, Los Angeles.

?We saw the Gamespot app as a significant market opportunity,? he said. ?No other app out there delivers as much game-related video content, complete image galleries, and deep content.?

GameSpot is a gaming Web site where visitors can play games, read reviews and participate in tournaments.

The application was developed by CBS Mobile, a unit of CBS Interactive Inc., which is in charge of building CBS Corporation?s wireless business across entertainment, sports and news for CBS, The CW, and CBS Paramount Television.

Game expansion
With the application users can filter content by gaming platform including PlayStation 3, PC and PSP channels, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, iPhone and iPod.

Gamers can also decide what they want to play based on the genre of the game. They can choose action, adventure, sports, strategy, driving or simulation games.

Although the application is currently only available for the iPhone and iTouch, the company is looking to expand on other smartphone platforms.

?Obviously, with the tremendous growth in smartphone usage, we evaluate every hardware and software combination out there to see where we can make the most significant market impact,? Mr. Sakai said.

?The plan is to definitely expand our offerings across other platforms,? he said.

GameSpot features
Consumers can look through a video library that features the most recent game trailers, exclusive interviews, game play clips, live-event coverage and demos.

Additionally the application includes a GameSpot original show called ?Today on the Spot,? which is a segment hosted by GameSpot editors and producers offering sneak peeks of the hottest upcoming games, breaking news from the gaming world and special guests.

With the application, users can watch related clips, gameplay videos and trailers while browsing other content without interruption.

GameSpot mobile video player lets you watch gameplay videos and trailers while browsing other content without interruption.

GameSpot features an online gaming community where gamers can meet and interact with other like-minded enthusiasts.

?The app will be promoted extensively across the CBS Interactive network of mobile web sites, apps, and online properties,? Mr. Sakai said.

?In addition to the internal marketing, we will work with our ad network partners to increase the marketing footprint, and drive more downloads,? he said.
