San Francisco Chronicle entices existing, new readers via iPad newspaper experience

The San Francisco Chronicle is letting readers experience the publication in a new way via a re-imagined iPad application.

Readers can experience the content and features by buying a monthly or annual subscription through in-app purchase in Apple?s App Store. Additionally, current Chronicle paid subscribers have access to the iPad through their current subscription and new users can access the content free for the first 30 days.

?It makes sense to extend our content to the iPad platform,? said Ward Bushee, executive vice president and editor of The Chronincle, San Francisco.

?It?s a [whole new] newspaper experience,? he said.

San Francisco Chronicle is the Bay Area's news and information source and has been connecting the region with its journalism since its founding in 1865.

Mobile news
Readers can chronicle articles and photos that are delivered instantly everyday to the iPad, with no need to download each day?s edition.

Users can read breaking news as it is updated throughout the day and use the carousel navigation to move between sections faster.

Additionally, the app features 360-degree photo panoramas of the Bay Area?s best-known landmarks, as well as events and festivals.

Readers can experience the newspaper in a whole new way

?There is a full marketing plan in place that involves using our print edition with ads talking about the app,? Mr. Bushee said. ?We?re featuring it at the top of our Web site.

?We also have a lot of radio and TV going into the market that features the app and we?re trying to get people to take a look at it and we?re doing email blasts as well,? he said.

Additional features
The app also lets readers view up-to-the-second weather and traffic reports and features a seven-day archive of the newspaper that lets them read previous stories or features that they may have missed.

Readers can also check out the publication?s blogs such as the celebrity scoop from The Daily Dish, the latest pop culture from Hot Topics and political news from Below the Beltway.

San Francisco Chronicle is offering monthly subscriptions for $5.99 and annual subscriptions for $59.

?The iPad app presents a new newspaper experience,? Mr. Bushee said.
