CNBC Mobile unveils real-time NYSE quotes

CNBC Mobile is making real-time New York Stock Exchange quotes available to its audience free of charge, with advertising support from energy giant BP.

Both CNBC Mobile and CNBC.com will use "NYSE Realtime Stock Prices," a new service from the New York Stock Exchange that launched June 26. It is a free, real-time service that doesn't require sign-up, log-in or exchange of information.

"We've been big advocates to make this happen, pushing the exchanges to open this up so we can offer a product to mobile device users," said Scott Drake, vice president of CNBC Digital, Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

"This gives our audience free pricing information with a news story, data and instant analysis all together," he said.

CNBC is the nation's leading business cable network, owned by General Electric Co.'s NBC television broadcaster.

Earlier this month, real-time quotes for stocks traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange became available on CNBC.com and CNBC Mobile.

The NBC Mobile WAP site launched just before that.

"News has been available real-time on the Web, but there was always a delay of the data," Mr. Drake said. "This service is a marriage of real-time news and real-time data and information that helps structure the bigger picture of the story, giving users the ability to make better investing decisions.

"This service is quick and actionable," he said.

The mobile advertising will initially be in the form of traditional graphical display ads. But CNBC anticipates rolling out other formats and platforms down the road.

CNBC has also launched SMS campaigns featuring the programs such as "Mad Money," "Fast Money," "Power Lunch" and the "Big Idea."

In addition, CNBC has a live-streaming feature through Qualcomm-owned MediaFlo's Flo TV mobile service.

"We know that our CNBC viewers are spending a lot of time on their mobile devices, so we want to get them important information wherever they are," Mr. Drake said. "Our WAP strategy is that we want to be able to tell stories and reach our audience via mobile."

CNBC provides business news and real-time financial market coverage to more than 340 million homes worldwide, including more than 95 million households in the United States and Canada.

CNBC viewers can manage their individual investment portfolios and gain additional in-depth information from on-air reports by accessing http://www.cnbc.com and via their mobile WAP site.

"We're seeing a huge acceleration of mobile usage worldwide," Mr. Drake said. "This is a great opportunity for CNBC to serve the mobile platform, to participate in it and take advantage of it."
