Washington Post sponrs LaunchBox08 startup contest

Washington Post Co., in partnership with LaunchBox Digital, is hosting events for LaunchBox80 at its offices in Washington

Washington Post Co. is sponsoring a global competition for digital startups from LaunchBox Digital, an investment firm focused on mobile and Web technologies.

The competition, named LaunchBox08, calls for applicants to submit innovative ideas for the chance to win startup funding and participate in a 12-week business-building program.

In addition to funding, LaunchBox Digital will offer advice and technical support. Out of the applicants six to 10 entrepreneurs will be selected to receive funding ranging from $15,000 to $30,000.

Caroline H. Little, CEO and publisher of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, will become a member of LaunchBox Digital's advisory board. Ms. Little's responsibilities will include counseling emerging technology leaders on how to build a company.

Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive is the online publishing subsidiary of Washington Post Co. Its portfolio of sites includes washingtonpost.com, Newsweek.com, Slate.com, TheRoot.com, Budget Travel Online and Sprig.com.

Washington Post Co., in partnership with LaunchBox Digital, is hosting events for LaunchBox08 at its offices in Washington. There will be Pitch Days where participants will present their businesses to angel investors, venture capitalists, potential strategic partners and press.

Applications for LaunchBox08 can be submitted online through March 14. The program starts in May.
