Car and Driver, Fortune publish on BlackBerry PlayBook

Time Inc.?s Fortune, Hachette Filipacchi Media?s Car and Driver and Kompas, the largest daily newspaper in Indonesia, have all created editions of their respective publications for Research In Motion?s just-released BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

All of those publishers tapped WoodWing Software?s Tablet Publishing Solution to optimize their content for the RIM tablet and deliver the content via WoodWing´s Reader App for the BlackBerry PlayBook, available in BlackBerry App World. HFMUS?s strategy is to reach car enthusiasts with Car and Driver content wherever they are.

?Tablets allow Car and Driver to reach a wide audience with a richer and more immersive experience than Web sites,? said Mike Dushane, vice president of consumer brand product development for Car and Driver and Road & Track at HFMUS, New York. ?We are testing apps and content for as many tablets as possible to better understand how our audience interacts with the devices.

?Tablets may help drive the widespread adoption of paid digital content, but even if they don't, they are a critical platform for our audience because they allow brands to create composed experiences that drive deeper engagement than other digital platforms,? he said. ?This deep brand engagement lends itself to both commerce and sponsorships.?

WoodWing Software, headquartered in The Netherlands, creates platforms for the production of print, online and tablet publications.

Car and Driver targets PlayBook users
The one-time PlayBook edition of Car and Driver contains in-depth reviews and comparison tests that are supported by photos and videos.

Car and Driver's Time Trial application for PlayBook, which is accessible via Woodwing?s Reader App, appeals to car nuts, per HFMUS.

The app includes the annual Lightning Lap feature, in which the year?s hottest new performance cars get their first full shakedown at Virginia International Raceway.

Readers can read about how the cars perform on-track, see video, view photos and compare overall lap times for more than 100 cars over the history of the event.

?There's a natural overlap between the guys to whom this appeals and the early adopters who will acquire PlayBooks,? Mr. Dushane said.

Tablet content for car enthusiasts

At this time, Car and Driver Time Trial for PlayBook is not sponsored.

?We feel it is more important to be on the PlayBook early than to find sponsors or charge for content at this early stage,? Mr. Dushane said. ?Obviously, this will change as time goes on.?

Fortune and Kompas
The bi-weekly Fortune magazine is aiming to keep its readers with a BlackBerry PlayBook up-to-date with stock quotes and performance metrics of featured companies.

The Fortune newsfeed gives PlayBook users access to the latest business news. Streaming videos, interactive charts and photos round out the tablet edition.

The Kompas Editor?s Choice application of Gramedia?s Kompas, which claims to be the largest daily newspaper in Indonesia, is offering a daily selection of articles, stories, photos and videos that are automatically updated to the PlayBook.

The content created with WoodWing´s Tablet Publishing Solution is distributed to WoodWing´s Reader Apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook using the vendor?s Content Delivery Service.

?Woodwing's tools allow Car and Driver's editorial and design staff to quickly create content for print magazines and a variety of tablet devices, without intermediation by a technology team,? Mr. Dushane said.

?Our Woodwing partnership helps us reach our audience across the tablet ecosystem with minimal investment, as there is likely a strong overlap between the early-adopter power users who will get a PlayBook and the Car and Driver audience,? he said.
