Samsung embeds new Shazam music discovery features

Mobile music discovery provider Shazam has embedded its technology in the Samsung BeatDJ M7600 and BeatDISC M6710.

These new mobile phones will initially include the Find Similar and Find Tag features to help customers find the music they are looking for. These latest Samsung handsets will be available worldwide by April and May, respectively, although U.S. carrier availability hasn't been publicly announced yet.

"We have been working with Samsung for a number of years to help them develop compelling new features that enhance the user experience on their phones," said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam, London.

"Shazam's strategy is to help consumers capture, store and share magical music moments and the new features help consumers populate track names in their media library on relevant Samsung phones, as well as discover new music through our unique recommendation technology," he said.

"This enables Samsung to differentiate itself among other handset manufacturers, while Shazam gains the ability to expand its feature set and capabilities to attract an even larger audience."

The new features include Find Similar, using Shazam's collaborative filtering technology to offer customers other tracks they might like based on the individual track they've just tagged.

When a consumer tags a particular track, recommendations are provided for similar tracks based on the behavior of more than 35 million other Shazam users worldwide.

The Find Tag feature lets consumers trace details of existing tracks on their phone where all or some of the information is missing or incorrect.

By selecting a track within the Find Tag feature, the song is then analyzed and the correct metadata including title, artist, album and genre is returned and the information is added to the track.

This feature allows consumers to explore their collection through searching, sorting or creating a playlist by artist or genre.

With the launch of these new features, customers can discover more information about their own music and discover similar songs.

Shazam is a mobile music discovery application that lets consumers experience and share music with others across mobile devices and the Internet.

With more than 35 million mobile consumers since its launch, Shazam has created a way for music lovers to connect to each other through their musical tastes and preferences.

Shazam is preinstalled on many devices through its relationships with carriers and original equipment manufacturers. It has partnered with more than 75 carriers across 60 markets worldwide, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

In addition to Samsung, Shazam has partnerships with other device manufacturers such as Motorola.

The Shazam Tag Chart, generated by the company's mobile music recognition service, is an indicator of market interest in pre-release material and a monitor of the hit potential of a track or artist.

Shazam is tapping into Samsung's community of music aficionados.

"These innovative new handsets [BeatDJ M7600 and BeatDISC] will be targeted to music lovers who want to listen to, discover and interact with music on the go," Mr. Fisher said.
