Mobile Web usage not confined to smartphones alone: Study

Opera Mini has 10 billion things to be happy about. The company reported that users viewed more than 10 billion pages via the Opera Mini mobile Web browser since May.

The 10 billion represents an 8 percent jump in page views since May. Opera's State of the Mobile Web report provides information on the top global trends affecting the mobile Web.

"You see, these numbers prove the mobile Web is not confined to smartphones alone," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software, in his introduction to the full report.. "In general, feature phones from Nokia and Sony Ericsson dominate our reports.

"For companies planning their mobile Web strategy, it is not enough to cater to one phone or one type of phone," he said. "Rather it is important to code for the Web itself and let the browser on the phone handle the rest."

In June 2009, Opera Mini had nearly 26.5 million unique consumer users, a 4.2 percent increase from May and more than 143 percent compared to June 2008.

These numbers reflect only the Opera Mini users who have specifically chosen to install the browser on their phone.

Those 26.5 million people viewed more than 10.4 billion pages in June. This means that Opera Mini servers were processing more than 346 million pages per day.

In June, Opera Mini users generated more than 168.4 million megabytes of data for wireless carriers worldwide.

Since May, the data consumed went up by 5.6 percent. Data in Opera Mini is compressed up to 90 percent. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed almost 1.7 petabyte of data in June. Since June 2008, data traffic is up 236 percent.

The top 10 countries for Opera Mini usage this month are Russia, Indonesia, India, China, Ukraine, South Africa, U.S., Britain, Poland and Nigeria, respectively.

In the top 10 list of countries, India continued to move up the rankings overtaking China for third place.

Nokia phones continue to be the handsets of preference for Opera Mini users, with Sony Ericsson claiming second place.

BlackBerry and Samsung phones are the preference in the United States.

The study also showed which sites are most visited in the U.S. Google.com was most visited, followed by Facebook.com, Myspace.com, Wikipedia.org, Cnn.com, Youtube.com, Yahoo.com, My.opera.com, Nytimes.com and Accuweather.com, respectively.

"We refer to this concept -- using Web standards to create sites that work across devices -- as One Web," Mr. Tetzchner said. "One Web is more critical now than ever before to ensure millions of users are able to access sites and services."
