Compuware completes $295M acquisition of Gomez

Software provider Compuware Corp. has completed its acquisition of analytics firm Gomez Inc. for $295 million in cash.

The two companies said that they will deliver services for optimizing application performance across the mobile Internet. Compuware said that it will retain the Gomez brand, technology portfolio and business model.

?Compuware can now offer unified visibility, isolation and resolution of application performance problems stemming from the datacenter behind the firewall, all the way out to customers, wherever they are on the Internet,? said Mark Hillman, vice president of strategy and product line management at Compuware, Detroit.

?As the number of mobile Web users around the world explodes, Compuware will now be able to optimize the performance of applications and services delivered via the mobile Web, helping businesses and mobile operators better leverage the cost-efficiencies and superior reach of this growing channel,? he said.

Compuware is a service provider of software, experts and best practices to ensure applications work well and deliver business value.

Gomez is a Web application experience management observer, letting organizations use an on-demand platform to optimize the performance, quality and availability of their Web and mobile applications.

Helping businesses on mobile Web
The deal brings 270 new employees to Compuware, including the complete Gomez leadership team.
Jaime Ellertson will serve as president of Gomez, now known as the Web-performance division of Compuware.

Compuware introduced Vantage for Mobile in the second quarter of 2009. The service gave carriers and mobile broadband operators the ability to measure subscriber behavior, improve customer satisfaction and drive the average revenue per user higher.

Earlier this year, Gomez announced its mobile Web performance benchmarks that compare and contrast the mobile Web performance of industry leaders in the airline, banking and search sectors.

?Vantage for Mobile, combined with Gomez?s Web performance management tools that were originally designed for the fixed Web, creates the most comprehensive solution for the mobile Web,? Mr. Hillman said.

?This means businesses can improve the availability, speed and consistency of mobile Web experiences by proactively identifying performance-impacting variables across the entire mobile Web application delivery chain including enterprise data centers, ISPs, content delivery networks, carriers and devices," he said.

?This ability to understand and improve performance is based in a true view of users? mobile Web experiences across the world, gleaned from Gomez?s comprehensive testing network, which includes over 5,000 mobile device profiles."

Mr. Hillman said that the primary synergy between Compuware and Gomez is that both companies are focused on helping businesses take a more proactive approach to ensuring great application performance.

Through the acquisition, Mr. Hillman said that for the first time businesses will be able to directly isolate and map Web and mobile performance problems directly back to the root cause behind the firewall.

Businesses will also be able to accelerate the resolution time.

Imad Mouline, chief technology officer at Gomez, Lexington, MA, said that the mobile Web is growing at an extraordinary rate thanks to smartphone sales.

?Together, Gomez and Compuware can now pinpoint and resolve a more comprehensive breadth of mobile Web performance issues, both within and beyond the firewall, for a more comprehensive range of mobile users around the world,? Mr. Mouline said. ?This will help businesses maximize investments in mobile Web initiatives and reap the full benefits of this growing channel, including increased customer satisfaction, revenues and brand strength, as well as reduced costs.

?Likewise, mobile operators will have visibility into subscriber behavior enabling them to resolve problems quickly, remove network bottlenecks, introduce new devices and services with confidence and improve customer satisfaction,? he said.
