Google expands reach of its Buzz social media tool

Google is expanding the reach of its Google Buzz social product by making it available on additional devices.

Google has worked hard to make Google Buzz for mobile accessible on more devices in more locations. It is now available in 37 languages through http://buzz.google.com.

?The company originally launched Google Buzz in February. Google Buzz is a tool for consumers to start interesting conversations when they are out and about,? said Alex Kennberg, a software engineer at Google Mobile, Mountain View, CA. ?Not any more. Today we?re a releasing an XHTML version of the Buzz Web site that can be accessed from many other mobile devices, including those running Android 2.0, BlackBerry, Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile."

The company has also made it available to mobile devices with browsers that do not support the HTML5 capabilities the Web application uses.

Google Buzz integrates with a consumer?s Gmail inbox and makes it easy to start rich conversations about the things they find interesting. Google Buzz for mobile uses location to identify places around the user.

Consumers can select one of these places and attach it as location tag to their posts, or read what others have posted about the place.

The social media product lets consumers share Web links, photos and videos with those important to them.

Rather than simply creating a mobile version of Buzz, Google decided to take advantage of the unique features of a mobile device ? in particular, location.

There are several ways to use Google Buzz on a mobile phone:

Buzz.google.com: This Web application provides access to Buzz from an iPhone or Android phone's browser, letting users view and create Buzz messages. It has two different views: Following view shows buzz from the people one follows and Nearby view shows public buzz that has been tagged with a location near the user.

Buzz on Google Maps for mobile: The new Buzz layer lets consumers see buzz near them or anywhere on the map.

Voice Shortcut: The voice shortcut, which is available in the quick search widget on Android and in Google Mobile App on iPhone, lets users post Buzz without typing anything. Just say ?post Buzz,? followed by whatever they would like to post.

?With Buzz for mobile, we hope you can start interesting conversations about places and be more spontaneous when you are out and about,? said Punit Singh Soni, product manager at Google Mobile, Mountain View, CA, in a blog post. ?How many times have you missed a fun event, even though it was nearby? Or a better choice of dessert, just because you didn't know about it??
