Vivino app drinks up success with cross-platform translation tool

Vivino is leveraging a translation service across multiple platforms to enhance the local flavor of its global mobile wine review application, reducing the time and cost related to making over digital properties for international audiences.

By choosing Smartling?s global delivery network, Vivino achieved the local reach that was critical to its success and growth. The results showed how a mobile app that is localized gains an edge over non-localized competitors in the international marketplace.

?By offering an app in a local language you're sending signals to the consumer that their time and energy is important, and that the brand is doing what they can to make the app experience as enjoyable as possible,? said Stephen Favrot, vice president of marketing for Vivino, which is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

?This sign of respect will greatly improve a consumer?s perception of the value the app provides, improving the likelihood they will recommend the app.?

Product improvements
Vivino, which aims to improve the wine-drinking experience for consumers, from the casual to the experienced, chose to deploy Smartling?s system because it spanned multiple platforms and allowed translation work to be done in conjunction with product improvements.

Community-driven wine reviews.

With a database containing over 3 million different wines, Vivino is a community driven app, with ratings, reviews, and pricing supplied by more than 7 million users.  Its services are offered on its Web site as well as Android and iOS mobile platforms.

After hearing about Smartling through a wine-industry partner, Vivino?s product manager, Christos Iosifidis, took a look at the company?s offerings and agreed that Smartling had the best solution for Vivino?s needs. 

Other users of Smartling?s technology include Foursquare, GoPro, HotelTonight, Path, Pinterest, Shutterstock, Spotify, SurveyMonkey and Vimeo.

The Smartling solution was launched in five core languages: English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.

Vivino has seen an increase in downloads of its application due to localization. 

And Vivino has already seen a significant savings on translation costs and the time required to manage translations across platforms. On top of that, it only requires one person to manage Vivino?s multiple open projects.

The flexibility of the Smartling platform allows Vivino to leverage various types of translation. For professional translation services, 

Smartling paired Vivino with In Every Language, a provider of translation services for a variety of languages.

In addition to professional human translation for most of its content, Vivino also uses a combination of machine translation and community translation to reach users in less frequently spoken languages, such as Catalán and Polish.

It also includes Brazilian Portuguese, in line with its expectation of having one million users in Brazil by next year.

Localization can shed light on consumer usage patterns, as users interact more comfortably and confidently with a brand?s service in a local language.
