Ad-supported Mobile Local News iPhone media app debuts

Inergize Digital and DoApp Inc. have launched Mobile Local News, an application that distributes locally branded news, weather, sports, politics and entertainment to consumers' iPhone and iPod touch.

Television and radio stations, magazines, newspapers and other information publishers can deploy Mobile Local News to provide text, images, photo galleries and videos to iPhone and iPod touch users, while taking advantage of revenue-generating opportunities that support today's business environment such as mobile advertising.

"Mobile Local News marries declining traditional ad revenue with the latest mobile technology to reach consumers anywhere at any time, generating valuable revenue for local media companies," said Wade Beavers, CEO of DoApp, Minneapolis, MN.

"In addition, Mobile Local News addresses the issue of app bloat by providing one app that includes many content categories," he said.

These categories include local news, national news, international news, worldwide business news, sports news and scores, video, weather forecasts, current weather conditions, real-time weather radar, severe weather alerts, geo-location based weather, geo-location based advertising, politics, entertainment news, weird news and lottery numbers, as well as horoscopes for yesterday, today and tomorrow.

E.W. Scripps, Four Points Media, Liberty Media, Newport Television and New Vision Television Group rely on Inergize Digital to position their Web sites as a source of local information.

DoApp Inc. is a development company of both consumer and business applications for Web sites, desktops and mobile devices. DoApp Inc. is an approved member of the Apple iPhone developer program.

Traditional ad revenue is on the decline for television, radio, newspaper, magazine and other media companies, and the adoption of iPhone and iPod touch devices is increasing.

In fact, 63 million consumers accessed mobile news and information in January 2009, according to ComScore, and iPhone and iPod touch are garnering 40 percent U.S. market share of handheld devices, according to BIA and Kelsey Group.

Mobile Local News offers two advertising positions: one ad position per page view per category and one ad position that is overlaid on every video, providing multiple opportunities for media companies to generate revenue in each mobile distribution.

Mobile Local News ad inventory can be sold by the local media company or filled with national ads.

"Because the three apps were just added to the Apple App Store, all ads are national," Mr. Beavers said. "We expect that local media companies will also sell ads locally, as well as geo-target ads."

In Mobile Local News, media companies can locally brand the user interface with logos and styles, extending each company's brand.

With the patent-pending navigation system, media companies can add and remove navigation categories and subcategories directly from the Web interface.

Media companies can also control content by adding and removing sections that are seasonal or relevant for specific times of the year.

Multi-connection video support is included for the EDGE Network, 3G and Wi-Fi, providing automatic video adjustment for an enhanced viewing experience.

Video can be integrated in all content categories and is showcased in the category 'Video.'

Geolocation-based weather and advertising provide extended forecasts, weather radar images in real-time, weather videos and local deals in any city at any time.

Mobile Local News provides a complete content offering, including high-quality story coverage with text, images and videos.

Consumers can share content with family and friends directly from the Mobile Local News application.

With one click, users can share story content by e-mail, text message or post on Twitter, extending the company's brand and reach.

Mobile Local News is immediately available to television and radio stations, magazines, newspapers and other information publishers on a licensing structure and/or revenue-share basis.

Mobile Local News is immediately available to consumers for both the iPhone and iPod touch on the Apple App Store at no cost.

By combining their knowledge of the media industry needs and business and consumer app development, Inergize Digital and DoApp have built Mobile Local News to meet the needs of local media companies and consumers.

4 WOAI in San Antonio, TX, 4 KTVX in Salt Lake City, UT, and 16 KLRT in Little Rock, AR, are the world's first television stations to implement Mobile Local News.

"DoApp leverages its team of former Google and IBM developers that build consumer and business applications," Mr. Beavers said.

The DoApp product portfolio encompasses mobile entertainment, productivity apps and lifestyle apps including two applications that made Apple's 2008 list of most popular applications.

Inergize Digital's products include mobile distribution, video streaming and playback, email and syndication delivery, online directories and advertising via contests and gaming.

"Inergize Digital has a strong foothold in the local media industry supplying nearly 200 television stations, magazines and newspapers with its digital management solutions that position clients as local news leaders online while generating revenue," said Jason Gould, senior vice president/general manager for Inergize Digital, Minneapolis, MN.
