Gomez upgrades platform to better ID mobile Web performing issues

Gomez upgraded its platform for managing Web performance across multiple browsers and load testing both mobile and Web applications.

The upgrade includes tools that detect Web performance issues created by cloud and third-party service providers. The company claims that together, these new capabilities empower organizations to optimize Web and mobile experiences for all end-users, regardless of location, choice of browser or device.

?Gomez?s platform update is designed to help businesses build and launch new mobile Web initiatives with greater confidence and performance assurances,? said Imad Mouline, chief technology officer of Gomez, Lexington, MA.

?Web traffic from mobile devices has skyrocketed over the past year,? he said. ?The expansive reach and vast revenue potential of the mobile Web means that businesses need to be optimally prepared for mobile Web visitors. 

?More specifically, businesses must deliver mobile Web experiences that are consistently fast and reliable, including during periods of peak traffic across a broad range of devices.?

Gomez is the Web performance division of Compuware Corporation, which provides solutions for optimizing the performance of Web and mobile applications.

The company claims that today?s mobile applications are increasingly composite and rich, comprising more content and functionality which is sourced from cloud providers and multiple third-parities, but ultimately all the components must assemble and work in the end-user?s browser.

According to Gomez, any of the third-party objects or services can degrade the performance of an application.

?Gomez?s updated platform will enable businesses to comprehensively load test their mobile Web sites and applications in the same way they do for the PC Web,? Mr. Mouline said. ?This will help ensure that mobile Web sites and applications demonstrate superior speed and reliability under load, when businesses often have the most to gain or lose. 

?Today?s load testing solutions for fixed Web sites and applications enable businesses to combine traffic from the cloud with traffic from real-world desktops,? he said. ?This gives businesses a realistic view of the user experience under load, and allows them to then able to trace back through the various elements of the Web application delivery chain in order to isolate and fix weak links in the chain, thus assuring strong end-to-end application performance. 

?Now, businesses can load test their mobile Web sites and applications in the exact same way, which enables them to optimize performance across the entire mobile Web application delivery chain, including such elements as carriers, mobile devices and browsers.?

The service includes features that identify performance issues caused by cloud or third-party service providers such as networks, content delivery networks, Web analytics and ecommerce tools.

According to the company, it can test and monitor the performance of 5,000 mobile device profiles and with the update, provide better support for recording and testing the performance of smartphone applications such as iPhone and BlackBerry.

?Through testing the performance of smartphone applications, IT and development teams can accelerate the identification and resolution of smartphone application performance and availability problems,? Mr. Mouline said.

?As users adopt smartphones en masse, this helps IT teams maintain a superior front door to a rapidly growing user base while enabling development teams to speed time-to-market for revenue-generating smartphone applications,? he said.
