Fox Business launches iPhone app to extend brand

Fox Business has launched an iPhone application that features live streaming content to extend its digital brand.

The new application features push notification for stocks and location-based services. 2ergo developed the application for Fox.

?We basically put out the app so that we can get business news out in front of commuters and consumers,? said Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager at Fox News Digital, New York. ?As always it?s about brand extension for us.

?With the application, consumers can get live content during the day no matter where they are,? he said. ?The other pieces on the app all play into staying in contact with the user.

"We?re constantly interacting based on the info the consumer is looking to receive.?

Fox Business Network is a financial news service.

The application is currently free and not ad-supported. Mr. Misenti said that the key for Fox Business was to launch the application, then explore monetization strategies down the line.

Between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. EST consumers can watch live streaming news broadcasts from the television network while on in the iPhone application.

Consumers can also access archived broadcast content at all times.

The application also features real-time stock detail using the push notification features. Consumers can create and customize the stock alerts for their specific stocks.

Stock information from NASDAQ, S&P 500 and Dow Jones are all available in the application, as well as the ability to search for a stock by name or ticker.

When a consumer turns the iPhone horizontally, the application will bring up a graph that lets users use the touch screen and track stock information from a specific point in time.

Through the My Portfolio button, the consumer can pick and stock and add it to their personalized watch list for one-click access.

The application also features a news section that provides the latest business and financial news from Fox Business.

2ergo build a functional promo box in the application that lets the Fox Business team change the top of the application?s homepage with real-time information.

In addition to all the business and financial features, the application also uses the iPhone?s GPS search feature and consumers can get information on their local Fox Business channel, as well as find nearby hotels that carry Fox content.

When it comes to demographics, Mr. Misenti said that Fox was not targeting a specific age group. Rather, they wanted to use the iPhone as a way to reach a broader audience.

?Again you look at adoption rates and you look at the stats Apple is putting out there and it?s all pretty impressive to see all the downloads in the App Store,? Mr. Misenti said. ?It?s a natural extension for our online experience.

"The iPhone speaks to the evolution of the ability to deliver content to all smartphones,? he said. ?It is a direct extension of internet properties and what we?re doing online, but we?re taking it off monitor and putting it in pocket.

?It?s a very appealing way to our extend brand.?
