AT&T, Amazon, Nielsen: News briefs

AT&T curtails data for heaviest smartphone data users
AT&T smartphone customers with unlimited data plans will begin experiencing reduced speeds starting October 1 when their usage reaches a certain level.

Looking to address the growing demand for mobile data and to provide a better experience for all smartphone customers, AT&T said it will curtail the data usage of the heaviest users in a billing period. These customers will have their speed reduced once their data usage puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users. These customers will still be able to use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored at the next billing cycle.

AT&T said the top 5 percent of its heaviest data users on average use 12 times more data than the average smartphone data customers. The activities that typically put these users into this group are streaming large amounts of video and music on a daily basis over the wireless network. The company also points to certain types of applications as being data hogs, including streaming video apps and remote Web camera apps.
