Android, LinkedIn, Groupon: News briefs

Android leading OS, Samsung top OEM: Comscore
Android was the leading mobile operating system for the three months ending June while Samsung was the top handset manufacturer, according to new data from comScore.

ComScore surveyed more than 30,000 mobile subscribers in the United States and found that had Samsung had a 25.3 percent market share, up 0.8 percent. Samsung was followed by LG with a 21.3 percent share, Motorola with a 14.5 percent share. Apple gained 1 percent to come in at number four with an 8.9 percent share. RIM had a 7.9 percent share.

By operating system, Google Android continued to gain ground, reaching a 40.1 percent share of the smartphone market, up 5.4 percentage points. Apple had 26.6 percent of the smartphone market, up 1.1 percentage points.

Following the two leaders was RIM with 23.4 percent, Microsoft with 5.8 percent and Symbian with 2 percent.

During this period, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices. A total of 78.5 million owned smartphones, up 8 percent from the preceding three months.

In June, 69.9 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging, 40.1 percent used browsers, 39.5 percent downloaded applications, 29.1 percent accessed social networking sites or blogs, 26.9 percent played games and 19 percent listened to music.

LinkedIn mobile page views up 400 percent
With the release of its second quarter financial results, LinkedIn Corp. said its mobile page views have increased approximately 400 percent year-over-year.

The company also pointed to some of the steps it took during the second quarter to extend its mobile presence, including launching LinkedIn for Android in April and bringing its social news product LinkedIn Today to the iPhone and Flipboard.

During the second quarter, the number of LinkedIn?s members grew 61 percent, reaching a total of 115.8 million, Revenues for the second quarter increased 120 percent for a total of $121 million.

Groupon builds engineering team with Obtiva buy
Groupon is acquiring Obtiva, a Ruby on Rails software development firm based in Chicago.

The social deals company said it has been working closely with Obtiva since 2009 and already uses Obtiva?s engineers on many of its development teams.

Obtiva said on its Web site that it is not accepting new business but will continue to service existing clients.

HTC acquires Dashwire to enhance cloud services
Handset manufacturer HTC Corp. has acquired Dashwire Inc., which makes mobile and Web application platform called Dashworks.

Dashworks enables users to setup and personalize their smartphones as well as seamlessly access their mobile content across multiple screens and services.

HTC will use Dashwire's cloud sync and device set up products to extend the HTCSense.com cloud services it launched last year. Seattle, WA-based Dashwire will become a wholly owned subsidiary of HTC.

Best Buy Capital, the investment arm of retailer Best Buy, is one of the investors in Dashwire.

Nokia Siemens cutting 1,500 jobs
Telecommunications equipment company Nokia Siemens Networks said it has begun cutting 1,500 jobs.

The cuts are coming from the staff Nokia Siemens acquired when it purchased Motorola?s telecoms network unit in April. The GSM and Wimax technology divisions in several countries will be affected.

Nokia Siemens Networks is a joint venture of Finnish cellphone maker Nokia and Siemens, a engineering firm. It is Nokia?s second-largest division.

AT&T is introducing social gaming platform Mobage to customers
AT&T will bring the social gaming platform Mobage to AT&T Android users.

Mobage will serve as a hub for discovering and playing games. It will also enable users to connect and communicate with other players around the world. Mobage comes from mobile social games company Ngmoco.

The deal address the popularity of games on smartphones. AT&T customers will be able to find the Mobage app on Android Market. Mobage is currently in beta in North America.
