HP, Sprint, AT&T: News briefs

HP?s stock drops following exit from mobile devices
Hewlett-Packard?s stock price fell 23 percent Friday morning following the news that it will exit the mobile device business, possibly spin off its consumer PC unit and had bought software firm Autonomy.

HP?s stock fell below $23 a share, the lowest it has been since 2005.

The company said that the webOS unit has lost millions of dollars and that it will stop making TouchPad tablets and smartphones. In addition, sales for the PC unit fell 23 percent in the last quarter.

Is Sprint eyeing a bigger investment in Clearwire?
Sprint Nextel is looking to increase its investment in Clearwire and possibly take control of it, according to reports.

Sprint, the nation?s third largest wireless carrier, currently has a 54 percent equity stake in Clearwire.

The company is reportedly in preliminary talks with Clearwire?s other investors about purchasing their equity stakes in Clearwire. Other investors include Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks.

Clearwire recently said that it will need additional funds for its transition to TDD-LTE and to maintain its existing mobile WiMAX business.

AT&T eliminates $10 text messaging plan
AT&T has confirmed that it is switching up its plans for text messaging, eliminating a $10-a-month plan that gives customers 1,000 messages. 

Beginning this week, new customers will have the option of a $20-a-month unlimited plan or paying 20 cents per message with a pay-as-you-go plan.

Current customers will be able to keep $10 plan.

Skype launches WiFi app for iOS
Skype has launched a new iOS application called Skype WiFi ? which was formerly known as Skype Access ? for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

With the app, users can go online via an Apple device at over 1 million WiFi hotspots around the world. With Skype Credit, users only pay for the minutes they use. This means there?s no need to purchase WiFi access to check email or make a quick Skype call.

Skype says the app is good for travelers because it offers a cost-effective and easy way to get online on a per-minute basis, enabling users to avoid data roaming charges when they update Facebook, send a tweet or make a Skype call.

WiFi access prices via Skype start at 6 cents per minute.

4G expansion continues
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA continue to expand their 4G networks.

Verizon recently said that its LTE network, which was launched in Dec. 2010, now reaches more than 160 million Americans and is available in 117 cities. The company?s goal is to bring the 4G network to more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011.

T-Mobile?s HSPA+ 42 network is now available in 152 markets, reaching 170 consumers. 

BlackBerry music streaming service may be coming
Research In Motion is working on a new streaming music service for BlackBerry users, according to reports.

The company is supposedly in the process of signing deals with a number of major record companies to support the streaming service.

The service could be subscription-based, with a monthly fee charged to a subscriber?s phone bill.
