24 Hour Fitness pumps up mobile presence

24 Hour Fitness, the largest privately owned U.S. fitness chain, has released a mobile-enabled Web site that lets consumers manage their calorie intake and check their progress towards reaching their fitness goals.

Subscribers to the bodybugg, which includes an armband and an optional digital display that keeps users informed of calories consumed and burned, now have the option of logging into their account on http://my.apexfitness.com or http://bodybugg.com via their iPhone or iPod touch devices.

?We listened to feedback from bodybugg users, who told us that they wanted a mobile bodybugg system,? said Bill Quinn, senior vice president of merchandising at 24 Hour Fitness, San Ramon, CA. ?It?s a convenient tool for iPhone and iPod touch users who are constantly on-the-go, and this will further support them during their fitness journeys.?

Gym chain 24 Hour Fitness serves more than 3 million members in more than 400 clubs nationwide.

The company sponsors the U.S. Olympic Team and has partnered with consumer brands such as Coca-Cola, Dial and Everlast, as well as NBC?s reality TV show ?The Biggest Loser.?

The company first went mobile in December (see story).

Here is a screen grab of the site:

The bodybugg mobile Web site allows users to:

? Log in, view and edit meals from their iPhone or iPod touch
? View meals in their meal plans
? Access frequent foods, custom foods
? View information on calories burned, calorie burn targets and calorie balance
? View total calories logged for the day

?Most of us don?t sit in front of our computers all day,? Mr. Quinn said. ?So the mobile-enabled Web site allows for a more convenient way for bodybugg users to update their information and stay on track towards reaching their goals.?

Of note, last December, 24 Hour Fitness introduced My24 ? an iPhone application and mobile Web site that allows users to locate clubs while on the move, review club amenities, look up class schedules and access a variety of fitness tools.

Although the iPhone application and mobile Web site were designed with 24 Hour Fitness members in mind, they are also available to the general public without a log-in requirement.

Features of the My24 iPhone application include a Club Finder feature. My24 lists nearby clubs when users enter a local ZIP code on their handheld device and lets users find clubs using the ?search by city? or ?advanced search? functions.

Bodybugg requires a log-in.

?Bodybugg users who are traveling without a laptop or eating out for a meal or snack can now use their iPhone or iPod touch to update their information, including calorie intake,? Mr. Quinn said. ?We expect this will help our on-the-go users more accurately input their meals.?
