Washington Post offers political convention coverage on mobile

The Washington Post announced it will provide mobile coverage of the Democratic and Republican conventions.

The Post's continuous campaign coverage, convention events, political news and analysis is available at http://mobile.twp.com across all mobile devices. There is also a mobile site optimized for the iPhone and a Campaign Tracker widget for Windows Mobile users.

"We want to make Washingtonpost.com's content available to users wherever they are, whenever they need it," said Peter Barclay, director of mobile services for washingtonpost.com, Washington.

"With so many people getting news on their mobile phones at the conventions, we will make it easy for them to stay continuously updated on breaking news and developments," he said.

Washingtonpost.com is owned by Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, the online publishing subsidiary of The Washington Post Company.

Washingtonpost.com and the mobile site at http://mobile.twp.com will bring users real-time video coverage of this year's conventions, bringing readers political news and information wherever they are.

Users can get major convention news and political coverage on Twitter or get it sent to them directly via a daily email newsletter.

The media giant will also send out text-message alerts providing links to breaking political news as stories are posted to Washingtonpost.com.

Readers can share articles using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Del.icio.us, email and SMS.

"We offer political coverage across all mobile platforms," Mr. Barclay said. "Most recently, we launched an optimized washingtonpost.com iPhone site with an easy-to-navigate design that lets users read articles without zooming in and out of a page."

In addition, the Washington Post is offering downloadable widgets that let users add their favorite Washingtonpost.com political blogs to their own sites.

The Post's political blogs will provide continuously undated news and event coverage throughout the conventions.

Available blogs include the new PostPartisan, Chris Cillizza's The Fix, The Trail, Dana Milbank's Rough Sketch, Michael Dobbs' The Fact Checker, Mary Ann Akers' The Sleuth, Ben Pershing's Capitol Briefing and Channel '08.

Consumers can visit the Washington Post's 2008 Conventions Package at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/politics.

Daily Web coverage from the conventions will be hosted by Washington Post and Newsweek's political teams, including Chris Cillizza, Michael Isikoff, Jon Meacham, Howard Kurtz and Dana Milbank.

For the first time, reporters will live-stream interviews from mobile phones directly onto the live Web cast. A live discussion platform below the video screen lets users be a part of the conversation.

"This year, our reporters will use a cutting-edge cell phone application to live-stream video interviews with people around the conventions directly onto our Web cast," said Chet Rhodes, assistant managing editor of news video for washingtonpost.com.

"This new ability to incorporate reporters' uncut footage straight from their mobile phones will give users a heightened level of conventions coverage in real-time," he said.

Interactive timelines will offer a look into the lives and careers of John McCain and Barack Obama, featuring photos, videos, stories and profiles of the two candidates, tracing their rise to power.

Convention retrospectives will feature video interviews with David Broder and Ed O'Keefe providing a look back at some of the crucial moments in convention history.

The Live Discussion Series will let readers get their questions answered directly by Washington Post reporters and columnists, who will provide campaign facts and figures.

The Political Landscape 2008 Map will have delegate profiles, convention histories, polling information, campaign finance details and event schedules.

The Pick Your President Contest will let readers compete to correctly predict which states will make up the 270 electoral votes that John McCain or Barack Obama need to win the election.

The Washington Post will offer travel tips telling readers everything they need to know to get around Denver and St. Paul, including places to stay, events to watch and what to do outside of the conventions.

The PostPolitics Podcast is a daily political show hosted by Ed O'Keefe talking with Post reporters and newsmakers.

Convention Previews will have an in-depth overview of both the Democratic and Republican conventions discussing the major issues and events important to each campaign.

"The City Guide application lets Washington-area users turn their iPhones and iPod touches into an on-the-go, personal entertainment guide for thousands of local-area restaurants, bars and clubs, giving mobile users all of the information they need to conveniently navigate the entertainment scene in and around DC," Mr. Barclay said.

"We will continue to explore opportunities to translate features on our site for mobile audiences," he said.
