Google launches mobile site for elections

Google has joined the elections bandwagon with a new mobile site dedicated to the elections.

The site at http://m.google.com/elections will leverage Google mobile products to deliver information related to the race between Senators John McCain and Barack Obama for president. The site is in typical Google fashion -- plain vanilla.

"To help you stay up to date on the latest election updates, we've set up a new one stop shop [sic] for your mobile electoral needs," said Effie Seiberg, mobile special projects executive at Google, in a post on the Google Mobile blog.

Google has created five resources for mobile consumers interested in election news.

Using Google Mobile Search, for example, will let consumers link to search results for Senators McCain and Obama. This way, users don't need to type in the candidates' names on the phone each time that they want information.

Going to the Mobile News section links visitors directly to only news relevant to the elections.

The Mobile Reader is another feature of the site. Google already offers Google Power Readers in Politics, a resource online.

"If you're already following the reading lists of the presidential candidates or prominent political journalists on Google Reader, you can keep it up while you're on the go," Ms. Seiberg said.

Users have to subscribe via their desktop Internet to Google Reader and open an account to access Mobile Reader.

The Mobile YouTube channel also features on the site, linking to both candidates' YouTube channels. Mobile readers can watch the latest clips of speeches and press conferences from their mobile phone.

And then there is Mobile Maps for visitors to get around the conventions -- the Democratic show in Denver, CO, this week and the Republican shindig next week in St. Paul, MN.

"Make sure you've got Google Maps for mobile on your phone to help you get around town," Ms. Seiberg said. "And if you're going, stop by and say hello! We'll be at both conventions."
