Golf.com tees up mobile video for on-the-go instruction

Time Inc.?s Golf.com is helping readers with their golf game through a new mobile application that uses video to provide personalized coaching, putting it in competition with Condé Nast?s Golf Digest mobile video how-to launch.

The publication has adopted a choose-your-own-story-like experience to appeal to all golf players ranging from beginner to expert for personalized coaching. Golf is forging a deeper connection with readers by leveraging mobile video as it becomes more pervasive in mainstream media.

"With the Golf Fix Finder, we have created an entirely new and completely customized way for fans to interact with the great instruction that Golf is known for,? said Alan Bastable, executive editor of Golf.com. ?By focusing on each golfer's specific wants and needs, it is as if fans are getting a personalized lesson on the practice tee from a member of our best-in-class network of the Golf Top 100 Teachers in America.?

Golfing with mobile

Condé Nast sports magazine Golf Digest also modernized its content by launching a new mobile-first vertical video series, bringing tips to on-the-go users through well-known professionals (see more).

Golf 101 gives a beginner's guide to those just starting by providing a digital dictionary on terms of the game, whereas the other categories in the app focus on providing mobile videos to assist with problem areas of the player?s game. For instance, a user would select Irons if he or she needs help fixing his or her irons.

The tab then congregates a series of videos that can help with a wide range of problems in this area, such as needing more distance, trouble with making the green and shanking. Users tap on the group of which they need more assistance, but a few need a little more insight to the issue.

For a few selected categories, when tapped, a pop-up will appear on which users must select the option that most suits their gameplay. For instance, if a user taps ?I am missing the green to the right,? the app prompts users to select whether they are slicing or pushing the ball.

The videos feature individuals from Gold Magazine?s top 100 teachers, which walk viewers through steps to improve their game. Users can save the videos to their smartphone devices or natively within the app by selecting the favorite button.

Time Inc endeavors
Time Inc. took a bigger leap on mobile sports with its acquisition of FanSided, a sports, entertainment and lifestyle digital content network of more than 300 Web sites with 15 million unique visitors per month consolidates the media company?s two-year-old partnership with the network ahead of the personalization and customization of the traditional media company's Sports Illustrated magazine (see more).

?This app is also a great platform for doing things like easily sharing favorite tips with golf buddies via social, text, or email as well as returning to personal favorite lessons and drills, all working to integrate Golf's unique instruction into each player's connection with the game,? Mr. Bastable said.
