U.S. wireless subscribers to touch 297M: Study

IE is projecting average minutes of usage per month of 916 minutes nationwide in 2010

Despite the current economic conditions, IE Market Research is maintaining its optimism in the growth of the number of U.S. wireless subscribers.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based company is projecting that the total number of subscribers will grow from 253.7 million last year to 297.2 million in 2010, matching IE’s fourth-quarter 2007 forecast.

Of the 297.2 million subscribers in 2010, IE anticipates that AT&T will account for 79.2 million subscribers and Verizon Wireless 76.6 million.

The troubled Sprint Nextel is projected to have 43.6 million subscribers, which is a downward revision from IE’s previous forecast.

However, IE continues to expect that Sprint will have the highest average revenue per user levels nationwide in 2010 at $58.25. The carrier is also expected to boast the highest data average revenue per user of $13.11.

IE is projecting average minutes of usage per month of 916 minutes nationwide in 2010.

Verizon will continue to maintain the highest level of profitability among rivals at 48.3 percent EBITDA margin in 2010.
