MySpace launches app for Android

MySpace has developed an application for Android as part of its ongoing strategy of finding devices that will resonate with the social network's core audience.

MySpace Mobile application for Android is now live for those who already have an Android phone. The MySpace app includes cool features like instant photo upload from Android to a MySpace profile and the ability to check out tour schedules on band profiles.

"We think Android is a viable platform because it is open source and it will be craven by the developer community," said John Faith, general manager and vice president of mobile operations at MySpace, Beverly Hills, CA. "We figured it was smart to get into it early."

The MySpace app is also integrated with Shazam, allowing users to identify music and connect to the artist's MySpace page.

The integration allows MySpace users to identify music by holding the phone towards an unknown song and connect to the artist's MySpace page.

From there users can see band information, check out photos of the band or artists and even check Upcoming Shows schedules.

MySpace has already developed applications for Android, Sidekick and the iPhone. MySpace is in the midst of developing an application for Blackberry.

In addition to its mobile applications, more than two million daily unique users visit MySpace's mobile web site at http://m.myspace.com.

According to ABI Research, 70 percent of people who use social networks on mobile have visited MySpace.

"We have really seen a lot of momentum in mobile recently and we've been working on not only better ways to innovate our mobile offerings, but also to find better ways to monetize through advertising," Mr. Faith said. "MySpace users will love the new Android integration with cool features like instant photo uploading and access to the latest shows from their favorite bands.

"We want to ensure that all users have access to their global MySpace network while they're on-the-go, and we believe Android is a natural fit for an optimized MySpace Mobile experience," he said.

The MySpace Android application experience allows for deep integration with the device with:

â?¢ Instant photo uploading from an Android device to a MySpace profile
â?¢ Check out tour schedules on band profiles
â?¢ View and comment on photos, profiles, and bulletins
â?¢ Search and add new friends
â?¢ Send and read messages
â?¢ Update and view mood and status

MySpace is committed to provide mobile users with the social tools to discover, share, connect and communicate on-the-go.

The social network's mobile lineup includes the MySpace mobile Web site at http://m.myspace.com, and several integrated applications for specific devices.

"Mobile is all about short-form communication and presence," Mr. Faith said. "That coincides with social network a lot.

"People are always broadcasting what they are feeling, what they are doing and where they are going and getting that out to everyone in their network," he said. "This sharing of information is like a butterfly-affect and one post lends to a pattern of communication."
