Obopay debuts widgets for payments, money transfers

With millions turning to friends and family for a personal bailout in the form of a little extra cash, mobile payments service provider Obopay Inc. has launched three widgets.

These small applications can be added to Web pages -- such as blogs and profile pages on both the wired and mobile Internet -- to help people give, donate and pay money quickly via their handset. Obopay's goal is to make receiving and sending money via the mobile Web to friends and loved ones easier.

"Obopay's mobile payments makes it easy and convenient to send and receive money with your cell phone," said Ramy Mora, vice president of marketing for Obopay, Redwood City, CA.

"Because folks who use mobile payments also spend a lot of time online, particularly on social networking sites like Facebook and blogs, we wanted to create a way to send and receive money online which is as easy and convenient to use as Obopay on your phone," he said.

The Obopay widgets can be added to social networking profiles and blogs on sites such as MySpace, Facebook, hi5, Blogger, iGoogle, Windows Live, Wordpress and Yahoo.

Obopay's cash gift widget is targeted at people who prefer cash gifts for weddings, birthdays or any gift-worthy event.

For charitable and community organizations, the Obopay donation widget facilitates receipt of desperately needed dollars.

With Obopay's payment widget, individuals selling items online -- whether through storefronts, auction sites, or classified sites -- can accept payment for items via mobile devices or the Internet.

Obopay's payment widget is designed for nonprofits and other fundraising organizations, freelancers wanting to get paid quickly and people planning a special occasion.

For example, couples planning weddings don't have to force friends and family to troll through lists of desired items. With the gift widget, they get exactly what they want and need -- cash.

Students no longer have to wait for checks from mom and dad to clear. By adding an Obopay widget to their online profile or blog, they can receive money instantly.

Each of Obopay's widgets can be customized with specific text and added to social networking profiles, blogs, or online and mobile listings of various types.

Obopay is a service that lets consumers and businesses purchase, pay and transfer money through any mobile phone using Obopay's mobile application, SMS, the mobile Web or the site at http://www.Obopay.com.

Obopay works on any mobile phone and any carrier to provide consumers and businesses with mobile payments.

Obopay is bringing mobile payments to more consumers through alliances. The company has partnered with Citibank (see story) and MasterCard (see story).

Obopay predicts that mobile commerce and payments will continue to gain traction nationwide.

"We continue to see increased demand for mobile payments as the technology and services become more widely available," Mr. Mora said. "On-the-go consumers more than ever require a convenient way to send money to family and friends.

"Through our partnerships with financial services companies like Citi, MasterCard and Fidelity, we are meeting the demand for safe and secure mobile payment services," he said.
