Denver's largest credit union adds mobile banking

Bellco Credit Union is offering their members a mobile banking site, targeting those who haven't made the transition to online.

Members of the credit union can use their Internet-enabled mobile devices to check their account balances, view account history, transfer funds between accounts and pay bills online.

"With mobile banking, [our customers] can check account balances while waiting in line at a store or make a car payment while on vacation," said Sandra Sagehorn-Elliott, vice president of customer relationship management at Bellco, Greenwood Village, CO.

Bellco is the Denver metro area's largest credit union with $1.7 billion dollars in assets, more than 300 employees and 14 branches.

"We anticipate that a portion of our current active online banking user base will switch to mobile banking," Ms. Sagehorn-Elliott. "But we expect the most growth from members who currently don't use online banking because their lives revolve around their mobile device instead of a PC."

Features of the mobile site include finding rates on loans, CDs and other products, and finding ATM locations.

All members using Bellco online banking from their PCs can access account information on their mobile phones.

Personal information is never stored on the member's personal mobile device. The application is protected by the latest security technology, Bellco claims.

To power the mobile site, Bellco partnered with mShift, a provider of mobile banking technology services.

"The challenge now is getting the word out to all of our members that mobile banking is available at Bellco," Ms. Sagehorn-Elliott said.
