Mobile Minutes: Ride-sharing troubles; Amazon deliveries; iPhone stumbles; BlackBerry loss shrinks

Authorities in San Francisco and Los Angeles have threatened to put a brake on the popular ride-sharing services that are roiling the traditional taxi industry, accusing them of violating California state and local laws.

This past Christmas, when delivery delays left many Santas empty-handed, Amazon?s biggest vulnerability was exposed: It doesn?t control the last, most important step. Amazon is brilliant at getting orders out its own doors, but with rare exceptions, it relies on third parties?mainly UPS and FedEx?to get those orders onto the doorsteps of customers. 

Chief executive officer Tim Cook called the introduction of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus over the weekend the ?best launch ever.? He may have spoken too soon.

BlackBerry Ltd. reported a much smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on Friday, Sept. 26 and said it was concentrating on growth and investments, even as concerns about weak revenue linger. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company, which is pivoting to focus more on software and services as part of a drawn-out turnaround, also reported a huge number of conversions onto its heavily promoted new mobile device management platform.
