Thomson Reuters mobile effort ups the ante for legal market

Thomson Reuters has launched a mobile app for New York-based lawyers that combines legal news, analysis and research.

The app seeks to deliver value by giving lawyers both the news they need along with necessary tools to draw connections between news, facts and the law so they can better serve their clients. It is being introduced alongside a new Web site also targeting lawyers.

?Lawyers need to stay on top of developments in their field at a much faster pace these days,? said Amy Stevens, executive editor, Professional News at Thomson Reuters, New York. ?We can help with a multilayer product that provides quick updates and news to deep dive analysis, data and research.?

While the company offers other apps in the legal space, this is the first with a news element. The Thomson Reuters News & Insight legal is available on the iPhone.

However, the media company offers apps in other business segments that combine relevant news for the targeted segment along with other content, such as research and data. These include apps for traders and board of directors.

Providing more targeted information is an important marketing trend that Thomson Reuters is well-equipped to take advantage of, per Michael Bender, head of news publishing, professional, at Thomson Reuters. It is especially important in the mobile space as tablet use grows.

Tablets a growing opportunity
?The takeup we see from a tablet perspective suggests that we need to be able to create the right experience with the right content,? Mr. Bender said. ?If you can bring that unified experience together where the most important news stays with people on that mobile device, then you are that much further down the road.?

Thomson Reuters, New York, provides news and information for businesses and professionals, including cagtegory-specific data and research. It operates in more than 100 countries.

Combining news with other relevant content in mobile will be an important strategy for the company going forward.

?Thomson Reuters is one of the largest content sets in the world in addition to being a large news agency,? Mr. Bender said. ?This helps up make sense of the information in context and package it in a way that is most useful to people.

?News is a core component of the products we are going to build,? he said.

?What you are going to see in the products that we do is we?ll be taking the massive amounts of news we offer and getting much more targeted with the information that is relevant.?

In the legal space, the new app could help Thomson Reuters reach more senior lawyers. Traditionally, the company?s biggest audience in this sector has been junior lawyers and legal assistants using its research and data platform.

?Mobile is a way to help our legal business reach more senior lawyers,? Ms. Stevens said. ?Now we can get senior people on the go by attaching court briefs and decisions to news items.?
