Boston Globe aims to increase readership, subscriptions via digital edition

The Boston Globe has rolled out a digital replica edition that lets subscribers browse content and additional features across iPad and iPhone devices.

The Boston Globe ePaper is available on the company?s Web site, as well as on iPad and iPhone devices. The Boston Globe ePaper is formatted similar to the print version of the Globe, including the same sections, articles, photos and page numbers.

?The strategy is simply to increase readership and subscriptions to the Boston Globe across all platforms,? said Diane McNulty, executive director of corporate communications at The Boston Globe, Boston.

?This  new ePaper is available to subscribers of the Boston Globe ? print or online ? at no cost, whether you are reading it on BostonGlobe.com or on an iPad or iPhone,? she said. ?It is another extension to our overall suite of products that are bundled together with a subscription to the Boston Globe, and it complements our other digital offerings, including the Web site BostonGlobe.com, the GlobeReader, Boston.com and our mobile apps.

?The ePaper allows us to put the actual newspaper into the hands of readers who prefer the print version of the Globe, but may be traveling, or live outside of our delivery area, or perhaps just prefer to read their newspaper on a tablet.?

The new digital replica edition is powered by NewspaperDirect?s SmartEdition technology and replaces the first generation Boston Globe replica edition.

Through the Boston Globe ePaper app, readers can browse content offline, bookmark their favorite articles and access back issues.

The digital replica edition also features a digital page turning feature, page and article printing capabilities, a text-to-speech feature to hear articles and a navigation bar to scroll through sections.

The Boston Globe ePaper is available for free to all Boston Globe print and digital subscribers.
Additionally, single copy purchases of the app are available in Apple?s App Store for 99 cents per issue or $14.99 a month.

Globe subscribers can access the iPad and iPhone app for free.

?Mobile is an important part of our future,? Ms. McNulty said. ?With the Boston Globe ePaper and future mobile offerings, our aim is to extend our digital content on all available platforms, providing a great user experience, in as many formats as possible.?

Word of mouth
The new ePaper is currently being promoted on the BostonGlobe.com homepage. 

In addition, non-subscribers will be able to access the ePaper during a free BostonGlobe.com trial from April 1 through April 14.

?Future mobile products are on our roadmap, including an ePaper app for the Android later this year,? Ms. McNulty said.
