Associated Press, U.S. Cellular sign content distribution deal

The Associated Press and U.S. Cellular have launched two mobile Web sites tailored for U.S. Cellular customers across the country.

The content distribution deal offers a gateway to both AP's Mobile News Network, which provides international, national and local news, and AP Elections '08 coverage. The AP Elections '08 and Mobile News Network WAP sites are accessible through U.S. Cellular's easyedge To Go Web portal and the newly launched Mobile Browser.

"The Mobile News Network is the first product released by AP's Digital Cooperative, an initiative aimed at finding new digital outlets for news and information produced by AP members," said Jeff Litvack, general manager for mobile and emerging products at AP, New York.

"This content distribution deal is a result of our efforts to reach out to players in the mobile industry -- carriers, handset manufacturers, publishers, agencies and marketers to match consumers with relevant brands and products based on their location," he said.

The AP Elections '08 site is only available to U.S. Cellular customers.

The site is prominently featured at the top of the U.S. Cellular browser's "News and Weather" home page, ensuring that the latest breaking political developments are easily accessible to U.S. Cellular customers anytime, anywhere.

The AP has counted votes and declared winners every four years since Zachary Taylor was elected president in 1848.

This year, AP plans to provide comprehensive election night news, highlighting the efforts of AP reporters, editors, videographers, technical support personnel and others covering the presidential, congressional and state elections for the growing number of mobile users.

"At the AP, we saw a 178 percent month-over-month increase in demand for election news on the MNN last month, clearly demonstrating the interest of users to get more elections coverage," Mr. Litvack said.

"We wanted to get this information to them as quickly as possible and worked hard to deliver in the short-time frame this product with U.S. Cellular," he said.

The Mobile News Network at http://www.apnews.com covers the entire 100 top designated market areas and boasts a growing number of content contributors -- more than 1,000 news organizations signed up to provide local news stories.

For the month of September, the Mobile News Network claims to have received more than 26 million page views and more than 1.5 million local stories were read.

Mobile News Network is a multimedia news portal providing anytime access to international, national and local news content from a network of sources.

"We are proud to work with U.S. Cellular to bring the Mobile News Network and AP Election coverage into their customer's hand," Mr. Litvack said.

"We continue to see an exponential rise in demand for news and information and by working with U.S. Cellular we can deliver this information to 6 million U.S. Cellular customers across 26 states," he said.

"For the AP, specifically, by working with U.S. Cellular we further our goal of being the aggregated news portal for Americans on the go."

Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular is the nation's sixth-largest wireless carrier, serving 6.2 million customers across the country.

"This is part of our ongoing effort to provide our subscribers with all the information they want, while on the go," said Joe Settemi, director of product strategy and development at U.S. Cellular, Chicago.

"We are also focused on providing our customers with a good experience by keeping them up to date all the time," he said.
