Daily Racing Form runs its content on mobile

Horse racing enthusiasts can now have real-time race information even when they are not trackside.

The Daily Racing Form, a publication dedicated to horse racing, is making its news headlines, full stories, entries, results and workouts available on mobile devices for free.

"This mobile service is being targeted toward generally all racing fans that are not necessarily track side, but we also envision it being used at the track," said Shawn Kreloff, chairman/CEO of Sona Mobile Holdings Corp., New York.

DRF is based in Chicago. It is the leading publication for Thoroughbred racing horseplayers and professionals. In October it was sold to Arlington Capital Partner, a Washington-based private equity fund.

DRF's content will be delivered through a portal created by Sona, a software provider for gaming and entertainment.

The Sona Wireless Platform allows users to view content on devices such as the BlackBerry, Pocket PC, smartphones and WAP browsers.

The publication plans subscription-based features such as alerts, messaging and blogs in the future.

The Sona platform has advertising capabilities, which allow ads to appear on mobile devices without interrupting the user experience.

"The expectations are to familiarize DRF customers with the mobile service and generate advertising revenue," Mr. Kreloff said. "The second phase is to add components that will result in up-sell revenues, like video and handicap information.

"Challenges addressed include allowing customers anytime-anywhere capability to research and handicap horses, privacy and moving the racing demographic to a younger audience," he said.
