CNNMoney taps Gowalla for content distribution

Time Warner Inc.?s CNNMoney is partnering with Gowalla to connect the location-based mobile social network with Money Magazine?s annual ?100 Best Places to Live in America? list.

On July 12, CNNMoney.com broke its one-day traffic record during the launch of Money?s 2010 Best Places to Live feature, with 50 million-plus page views in one day, which is up 52 percent compared to page views last year. Much of that traffic was a result of mobile users accessing the site on their smartphones.

?CNNMoney wanted to incorporate location-based social networking data into Money Magazine?s 2010 Best Places to Live,? said Jen Nedeau, a spokeswoman for CNNMoney, New York.

?CNNMoney found the Gowalla experience in the towns spotlighted by Best Places to Live to be rich in activity in terms of check-ins, commenting and adding photos,? she said. ?We were also attracted to the encouragement by Gowalla telling its users to go out and explore places, which is highlighted by features like Trips, and is very much in line with the Best Places to Live brand.?

CNNMoney.com is the online home of Fortune and Money magazines, and serves as CNN.com?s exclusive business site.

The site attracts more than 10 million unique visitors per month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

The partnership with Gowalla is the latest example of CNNMoney?s use of the mobile channel.

In May CNNMoney.com launched its first application for Research In Motion?s BlackBerry, which joined a number of existing ways to access CNNMoney.com mobile content, including an iPhone application, text updates and mobile site (see story).

?We wanted to tap into the localized Gowalla audience and expose their content to a different group of people,? Ms. Nedeau said. ?The target demographic is visitors to CNNMoney.com, as well as individuals living in, around and visiting the Top 25 Best Places to Live.

?We have been promoting the story across a variety of media outlets and on CNNMoney.com,? she said.
