Text Them In reports unsafe drivers via SMS

Every day there are thousands who drive on this nation's highways like they own the road, speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating and blowing their horns in anger. Now, consumers can report them via SMS.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, one-third of all accidents and two-thirds of all vehicle-related fatalities are caused by aggressive drivers, and for the millions who carry mobile phones in their cars, there is now a supposedly easy and safe way to report them. Text Them In lets consumers anonymously report dangerous drivers by sending a text message from their handset.

"Studies have shown that when drivers know their driving is being monitored, whether it's by the police or cameras, they tend to drive more responsibly," said Alvin Butler Sr., president/CEO of Text Them In, Laurel, MD. "It's the 'fear of getting caught' attitude.

"One of the strategies of Text Them In is to put more eyes on the road and create a community of accountable drivers," he said. "Text Them In also allows people to vent their frustrations with unsafe and aggressive drivers in an anonymous way utilizing the latest technology available- text messaging."

Consumers can text the license plate number, state, car color, location and what happened to the short code 839846 (TEXTIN).

Then they can go to the Text Them In Web site at http://www.textthemin.com and enter their mobile phone number to get a complete list of the aggressive incidents they have reported.

If the vehicle's tag and owner are registered at the Web site, a text message or email will be instantly sent, notifying them of the incident. The owner would then be able to contact the driver and take corrective action.

"In addition, information will be made available to the proper authorities for chronic aggressive drivers whose vehicles have been reported multiple times," Mr. Butler said.

All drivers, including parents of teenage drivers, businesses and fleet operators, can use this program notifying them when the vehicles they are responsible for are being driven by others in an unsafe manner.

With millions of additional eyes on the road reporting unsafe drivers, motor vehicle departments, law enforcement personnel, insurance companies and nonprofit organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Students Against Drunk Driving will have additional resources to maintain safety on U.S. highways.

839846 (TEXTIN) is operational on all carriers nationwide including Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T.

To test the system, consumers can send the keywords "textin test" to 839846, then go to the company's Web site to view their message.

Text Them In does not charge for messages sent. However, carriers' standard message rates apply.

The company clarified that it does not condone texting while driving and furthermore considers this unsafe driving that should be reported.

Text Them In will run on an ad-supported model.

"We plan to establish advertising programs that will be made available to insurance companies, wireless carriers, driver-training programs and nonprofits organizations that advocate driver safety," Mr. Butler said.

Text Them In will employ various marketing tactics.

"Initially, word will get out through press releases and news stories," Mr. Butler said. "Later, advertising will include state MVA program promotions, Internet advertising and partnerships with nonprofits, highway billboards and radio and television advertising."
