Shazam upgrades iPhone app

Shazam Entertainment has launched an enhanced version of its music discovery application to take advantage of the iPhone OS 3.0.

The enhanced version is set to deliver an expanded set of features and increase the application's social networking capabilities. Now iPhone and iPod touch Shazamers have access to the all the upgrades and can become actively involved in the application's social networking functionality which includes access to the increasingly popular Twitter.

"The newest capabilities introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 enabled us to deliver an enhanced version of Shazam on the iPhone," said Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam, London.

"We have significantly evolved the Shazam experience, incorporating social networking and a very cool feature to track where the user has tagged specific songs throughout their musical journey," he said.

Shazam claims to be the world's leading mobile music discovery application.

Shazam has partnered with more than 75 carriers across 60 markets worldwide such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

The application has been launched across multiple platforms including the iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry Google's Android, Nokia's Symbian and Java (see story).

The enhanced version of the application is being promoted in the Apple App Store, where it is available for download along with a mix of marketing activity.

"Since launching on the Apple App Store last year, more than 7 million iPhone users have downloaded Shazam," Mr. Fisher said. "Given the viral nature of some of the features, we expect even more new users."

Shazam first made an appearance over seven years ago and was present at the initial launch of the Apple App Store last summer.

In the last year, there are more than 7 million users on Shazam and the platform has accumulated more than 100,000 user reviews worldwide.

One new feature of the enhanced version is the ability for users to tweet their tags.

Whenever a user wants to get information on a song they hear, Shazam listens, analyzes and identifies the artist and title. But now, users can tweet the songs they've discovered to their friends.

"The social networking features, like sending a virtual postcard to a friend or being able to tweet about a recently discovered song, lets our users really share their passion for music and artists they love," Mr. Fisher said.

"It is these connections that help more people discover and connect with amazing music, all in a mobile environment," he said.

Users also have the ability to send their tags as a Postcard to family or friends so that they can adopt the tag as one of their own, preview the song, and buy it direct from iTunes.

The Shazam application weaves in and out of many mobile aspects such as social networking, but has also taken advantage of mobile's location-base capabilities by allowing every tag to appear on a map so users know when and where they discovered each song.

"Our mobiles are with us everywhere we go and as our portal to the world when we're out and about, there are amazing opportunities to connect with just about any kind of content or experience, all at the tap of a thumb," Mr. Fisher said.

"It's hard to predict what will come around the corner, but we can be certain that our mobiles will help take us there," he said.
