Mobile users prefer Google over Bing: Strategy Analytics

Mobile phone users are considerably more interested in having access to Google compared to Bing, according to Strategy Analytics.

In ?Facebook and Google Most Desired Brands for Mobile,? Strategy Analytics investigates interest in the ability to use various applications from mobile devices. Survey respondents said they desire the ability to access Google and Facebook from their mobile devices.

?The key finding is that Facebook and Google are the most desired brands to have on a mobile phone in both the U.S. and Britain,? said Chris Schreiner, senior analyst of user experience practice at Strategy Analytics, Boston.

In both regions Facebook (first in the UK) and Google (first in the US) were ranked as the top two brands respondents were interested in having on their mobile phone,? he said. ?The results for Google hint at the popularity that Google's Android platform can achieve among smartphone owners, and the need users have for mobile search.

?In earlier research, we even found that Google led in brand perception for mobile navigation solutions ? and this was prior to their release of their free full navigation service on their Android platform.?

Mr. Schreiner said that the most surprising findings were the rankings for MSN in the U.S. and Twitter in the U.S. and Britain.

MSN was ranked 15th out of 24 brands evaluated in the U.Ss (though it was third in Britain).

Bing also had trouble making inroads, ranking 21st out of 24 in the U.S.

?It seems that MSN in the US is suffering from a brand image issue among mobile users,? Mr. Schreiner said.

Twitter was ranked only 16th out of 24 brands in the U.S. and 17th in Britain, despite the hype around its mobile-optimized micro blogging platform.

?We can predict based on this and other research we have conducted on the user experience that Android devices provide that they have the potential to take on the Apple iPhone in the smartphone arena,? Mr. Schreiner said.

YouTube was ranked 6th in the U.S. and 4th in Britain, showing that mobile users will be looking for user generated media content more than content from traditional media sources.
In the US, there was high interest among consumers in having their bank brand on their mobile, suggesting an increase in desire for mobile banking services.

?MSN desperately needs to improve its brand perception among mobile users in the U.S., and needs to better build brand perception for Bing, given the desire for mobile search as evidenced by the results for Google,? Mr. Schreiner said.

?Bing is still a recent service, and in part still hasn't been able to build any traction in terms of brand perception,? he said. ?Google has been synonymous with search for years, and is the number one site visited on PCs, so it's not surprising that they are set to dominate mobile as well.?
