Apple's iPhone, RIM, comScore: News briefs

IPhone has 7.4pc of mobile video messaging views: Mogreet
Mobile video messaging usage by Apple iPhone users increased from 5.4 percent to 7.4 percent of the total market share in the second quarter of 2011, according to new data from Mogreet.

The data shows that feature and smartphone users are increasingly looking to consumer video, pictures and audio on their devices. By leveraging MMS, digital marketers can reach their consumer base regardless of handset type with personalized video content.

Consumer behavior patterns for mobile marketing campaigns that integrated mobile video messages on Mogreet?s mobile messaging platform show that The LG enV 3 had a 3.9 percent share of mobile video messaging views, Samsung Intensify 2.9 percent, LG Cosmos 2.9 percent and LG enV Touch 2.7 percent.

By mobile carrier, Verizon Wireless had a 44.2 percent share mobile video messaging views, AT&T 37.1 percent, T-Mobile 7.1 percent, Sprint 5.7 percent and Cricket 2.2 percent.

The top five regions in the United States for mobile messaging views were the Phoenix area, West LA, South Bay; Inland Empire, San Bernardino, Denver area and Atlanta and suburbs.

RIM introduces cloud service for SMBs
Research In Motion has introduced a new cloud-based service for small businesses that enables them to manage and protect content stored on company- or employee-owned BlackBerry smartphones.

The service is designed for businesses with up to 100 BlackBerry smartphones that access email services from an Internet service provider or Web-based email services.

Companies will be able to wirelessly back up BlackBerry smartphones, remotely lock content, wipe the content and restore settings and content on a new or replacement device. The service is free.

14M mobile users scan QR or bar codes: comScore
Fourteen million mobile users in the United States scanned a QR code or bar code on their mobile device in June, according to new data from comScore. This number represents 6.2 of the total mobile audience.

Users are most likely to scan codes found in newspapers or magazine and on product packaging, according to comScore.

A demographic analysis of those who scanned a QR code or bar code shows that men were 25 percent more likely to scan QR codes than the average mobile user and represented 60.5 percent of the scanning audience. In terms of age, 53.4 percent of all QR code scanners were between the ages of 18 and 34 years old.

Additionally, 36.1 percent of QR code scanners had a household income of at least $100,000.

Interpublic selling Facebook holdings
Interpublic is selling approximately half of its holdings in Facebook for $133 million.

Interpublic formed a strategic relationship with Facebook in 2006 that enabled it to build its social media offerings on behalf of clients. Given Facebook?s significant growth since then, the strategic value of the investment has moderated, according to Interpublic.

At the same time, the financial value of the stake has appreciated significantly.

Local Advertising to reach $800 million in 2011: Borrell
Local advertisers are on track to spend nearly $800 million this year on mobile advertising, according to a new report from Borrell Associates. The company also forecasts local advertisers will spend more than $400 million on mobile promotions, including contests, coupons and deals.

The adoption of mobile has outpaced the rate at which local businesses embraced cable advertising and Internet advertising, according to the report.

The numbers are expected to double every year for the next five years, which would put local mobile marketing expenditures at over $18 billion for advertising and $4 billion for promotions. This is more than local businesses currently spend on traditional Web-based advertising today, according to Borrell.
