Starbucks, Apple offering free application downloads
Starbucks customers can download full-featured versions of premium mobile applications for iOS devices at no charge thanks to a partnership with Apple. The music app Shazam Encore, which costs $5.99, is the first to be offered.

Customers can pick up a free Pick of the Week card at a Starbucks location which contains a promotional code to download the app.

HTC?s patent infringement claims against Apple include Wi-Fi
HTC Corp. is alleging Apple?s Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod product lines infringed its patents.

The complaint filed by the Taiwanese handset manufacturer with the United States International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court of Delaware focuses on patents such as Wi-Fi capability and processor communication technology.

This is the third case before the ITC from HTC claiming patent infringement by Apple.

Last month, the ITC found that HTC violated two of Apple?s patents. The commission also recently said it will investigate a second complaint filed by Apple alleging HTC infringed its patents in mobile devices.

Nokia?s role as a leading OEM at risk: ABI Research
Nokia had a devastating second quarter and its position in the top five for OEMs is at risk, according to a new report from ABI Research.

Although Nokia remains the top overall handset manufacturer with 24.6 percent of the 359.7 million mobile phones shipped in the second quarter, Apple now leads in smartphones with 20.3 million iPhones shipped and Samsung is in second place with 18.7 million.

Overall, Nokia sold 20 million less units during the second quarter compared with previous quarter. This equates to 7.5 million fewer smartphones, 12.5 million fewer feature phones and an 18.4 percent sequential drop in units sold.

Nokia lost one third of its market share for smartphone shipments into the channel during the second quarter and saw its share halved over the past year.

At the same time that Nokia was losing share, ZTE and Huawei saw their overall handset sales grow during the second quarter by 28.9 percent and 26.3 percent respectively.

While Nokia is blaming an overstocked channel for the drop, ABI Research says the problem is a lack of demand for its products in regional markets such as Europe.
