Motricity names Jim Ryan as new chief marketing officer

Motricity has named former AT&T Mobility executive Jim Ryan as its new chief strategy and marketing officer.

Mr. Ryan is widely recognized as a pioneer in the mobile data industry, with more than 15 years of senior management experience. Chief strategy and marketing officer is a new position at Motricity.

"As Motricity continues to grow and mature as a business, we need a clear long-term strategy and a top notch approach to how we package and market our solutions that will maximize the significant opportunities present in the mobile data space around the world," said Ryan K. Wuerch, CEO of Motricity, Bellevue, WA.

"Jim Ryan, in his role as chief strategy and marketing officer is a perfect fit to fill this role," he said.

Motricity is a provider of mobile data services to mobile operators and content providers.

Their clients include AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Alltel, CNN, Fox News, A&E and Condè Nast.

While the vice president of consumer data services for AT&T Mobility, Mr. Ryan helped boost business from $250M to over $4B in just three years.

During his tenure at AT&T, Ryan supervised the provider's music downloading service, and was instrumental in the remodeling of its mobile web platform.

He also contributed to the development of its mobile video service.

Before AT&T, Mr. Ryan was a key leader behind the data services businesses at Spring PCS and O2 in Europe, when the idea of mobile data was still in its infancy.

"Mr. Ryan will be responsible for the overall Motricity strategy and brand as well as marketing communications, product marketing and corporate development," said Mr. Wuerch.

"He has joined Motricity to help make it the leading enabler of the highest value, most highly personalized mobile Internet experience on the planet."

Motricity powers over $2B of mobile content revenues annually for the majority of U.S. mobile operators and enterprise customers.

Over the past two years Mr. Ryan has been focusing his efforts on assisting early stage businesses in capitalizing on opportunities present in the global mobile data market.

Mr. Ryan's early efforts at Sprint are still yielding significant returns.

"The mobile data industry is still in its infancy," Mr. Ryan said. "When I started on this journey 16 years ago -- we had no wireless data networks, no wireless data devices, no wireless data solutions and no wireless data customers.

"Today, we have a rich and expanding wireless data ecosystem around the world, however we have only begun to scratch the surface on what we can really do with these tremendous capabilities," he said.

"In the next 4 years -- we will reach the point where just about every person on this planet will be able to connect on a real-time basis to each other and to the collective intelligence of humankind. I can't tell you what will happen next as I would be giving away a core part of the Motricity strategy -- stay tuned."
