Mobile Marketing Association releases global mobile advertising guidelines

The Mobile Marketing Association has released its first set of global mobile advertising guidelines for ads within content on mobile devices.

The guidelines are designed to help marketers, agencies and media companies increase their use of mobile advertising, but within acceptable parameters that won't hurt the customer experience on mobile phones.

"We've managed to come to agreement that there should be consistency across the globe and global brands can now deploy the same creative all over the world," said Laura Marriott, president of the MMA.

The MMA last year published region-specific guidelines for North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe, Middle East and Africa.

These regional guidelines, as well as those for Latin America, have been rolled into a global set of pointers to ensure consistency and common standards.

What these guidelines offer is improved formats around the mobile Web, along with new pointers for SMS and MMS messaging and downloadables.

Also included are recommended aspect ratios and banner dimensions, maximum file sizes, file formats and other technical specifications related to run mobile ads.

The MMA recently published the Mobile Advertising Overview to help beginner get acquainted with mobile advertising.

Associations such as the Interactive Advertising Bureau UK, the Australian Direct Marketing Association and the dotMobi Advisory Group have endorsed the MMA's global mobile advertising guidelines.

The MMA is the leading trade organization for mobile marketing. Based in Denver, CO, the MMA has more than 600 members, including mobile marketing service providers, advertisers, publishers, wireless carriers and ad agencies.

Members of the MMA's Mobile Advertising Committee formulated the format and policy guidelines for mobile advertising.

Winning unanimity across markets was one feat that impressed Ms. Marriott.

"For the first time ever we have consistence and agreement from North America, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Europe, Middle East and Africa," Ms. Marriott said.
