MLB.com debuts mobile service for Palm Pre

The official Web site of Major League Baseball has launched MLB.com Mobile Premium, a new mobile-optimized live game product developed for the Palm Pre smartphone.

Available on the Sprint mobile device via the MLB.com mobile Web site at http://wap.mlb.com, the service features live stats, video highlights and streaming audio broadcasts of every game. The mobile platform is designed to let fans can stay connected to their favorite team wherever they go via their Pre handset.

"This furthers our goal of bringing live baseball content to every device that has a plug or battery," said Matthew Gould, vice president of corporate communications for MLB.com, New York. "The target demographic is baseball fans on the go, allowing them to stay in touch with their favorite teams and players at their convenience.

"Mobile is an important part of the way people engage with the game and stay connected to it when they aren't at the game or in front of a TV or computer," he said.

"We want to make content engaging and provide a great experience, and MLB usually has 15 live events almost every day, which is a lot of drama."

MLB.com Mobile Premium is a premium area of the company's WAP site developed exclusively for, and only accessible on, the Palm Pre.

There are four live game components of MLB.com Mobile Premium:

MLB.com Mobile Gameday Audio lets fans listen to live audio broadcasts of every Major League Baseball game through the final out of the 2009 World Series. Each game will offer the choice of listening to the home or away broadcasts without any blackout restrictions.

MLB.com Gameday lets fans follow every pitch of every game with a detailed graphic presentation and live statistics.

In-Game Video Highlights let fans get real-time video highlights delivered directly to the smartphone soon after the play happens on the field.

The expanded scoreboard lets fans view live statistical data from every MLB game, including line scores, current runners on base and other game details.

MLB.com Mobile Premium on the Palm Pre is available to subscribers for a one-time fee of $14.99 for the remainder of the 2009 season, including the entire postseason, or a monthly charge of $2.99.

MLB.com has targeted other smartphone platforms as well, streaming full-length live games through its MLB.com At Bat 2009 application for iPhone and iPod touch.

"This fits into our core strategy of bringing live baseball content to fans on any device that has a battery or plug," Mr. Gould said. "What's the one thing besides your keys that you never leave your house without? A mobile device of some sort.

"We promote our apps and SMS alerts on our Web site, with email blasts, as well as our whole network," he said.
