News Corp., Conde Nast bet on Apple Newsstand

With the launch of iOS 5, Apple has rolled out Newsstand to serve as the central hub for mobile magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

With Newsstand, iPad and iPhone users can manage their subscriptions, which are updated automatically. The Newsstand feature has signed on publishers such as Condé Nast and News Corp.

?Apple?s Newsstand will help our readers find our content quicker and easier every day,? said Greg Clayman, publisher of The Daily, New York.

?Newsstand also allows publishers to use their cover as the icon in the app and since The Daily has bold graphics and covers, we think letting users be able to see it before opening it will be a big plus,? he said.

The Daily is News Corp.?s iPad-only daily magazine that launched in Januaury.

Line ?em up
With the Apple Newsstand, periodicals resemble a physical newsstand.

Users can also rearrange their favorite publications for quick access.

As a new feature, Apple?s Newsstand automatically updates and refreshes content, making it a fit for daily publications such as The Daily.

?When you wake up in the morning, our issue is already ready to go,? Mr. Clayman said.

?One of the challenges as an iPad user is having to sit down and download all publications before you leave for the day,? he said.

Apple?s Newsstand will keep the same subscription model for existing publishers.

Branching out
Apple's Newsstand deal plays off of competitor Amazon's Kindle Newsstand, where users can buy digital magazines and newspapers.

In addition to The Daily, Condé Nast has rolled out all of its digital subscriptions to be available on Newsstand.

Readers who already subscribe to Condé Nast?s digital titles ? including Allure, Brides, Glamour and Wired ? can now find their editions in Apple's Newsstand.

Additionally, Condé Nast has plans to release three of its other publications ? Bon Appetit, Condé Nast Traveler and Vogue ? to the app by 2012.

The Daily has positioned itself as a tablet-only publication and up until now is only available on the iPad.

The Daily recently took its first step beyond Apple by introducing a Facebook app.

?We?ve mentioned that an Android app is right around the corner for us,? Mr. Clayman said.

?The Daily?s intent is to be multiplatform publication in the future,? he said.

?As more people get tablets and read publications on their devices, we will continue to see the market grow.?
